Paolo Co-lombo, CEO of our partner Plumestars and AAPS fellow, was there presenting the speech: “Hyalu-ronic-Cisplatin Film for Implant for Malignant Mesothelioma Recurrences”, concerning Hyalcis ex-ploits nanotechnology and advanced material research results to bring to market an innovative med-ical treatment of mesothelioma. The uptake by pharmaceutical industry of the hyaluronic-cisplatin film technology, studied by Plumestars, will assign a more effective cure against recurrences of this rare and very aggressive form of cancer, that is difficult to diagnose and highly resistant to anti-cancer drugs. Eride Quarta from Plumestars, was also at AAPS 2019 presenting the speech: “Novel Insulin Powder: bioavailability in rats” and a poster concerning the last developments of dpCaPs manufacturing of CUPIDO project.

New Scientist Live 2019 offered not only an unbeatable talks program, but there were also more than 150 exhibits and lots of interactive experiences showcasing the greatest innovations, technologies, and research in the world right now. Among them, there was also CUPIDO at the booth 1350 with few exhibits on the nano to micro system that targets the heart. The event gathered over 40,000 professionals, families and science lovers, inspiring those of all ages.

The ESC Congress is one of the world’s largest and most influential cardiovascular events contributing to global awareness of the latest clinical trials and breakthrough discoveries. This year it gathered around 30.000 delegates and showcased more than 500 sessions during the five-day conference. The spotlight of this year was the Global Cardiovascular Health, highlighting differences in prevalence, clinical manifestations, prevention strategies, diagnostic modalities and management of cardiovascular diseases around the world. Our project coordinator Daniele Catalucci presented the latest results showing that a novel inhaled miR-133-loaded nanoparticle delivery approach can prevent cardiac dysfunction in an experimental model (Abstract 3072). The presentation of Daniele was first highlighted in the Daily Science News distributed to all the participants (available online too), and it was also selected as one of the Congress Condensed Basic Science Highlights presented during the last day.

Every other year, one of the ULLA member institutions organizes a summer school for PhD students from the 8 partners. These ULLA Summer Schools consist of a symposium on the opening day followed by a 5-day academic course program that covers a broad range of research areas in pharmaceutical sciences. Typically, up to 50 courses, given by lecturers from the ULLA partners, are offered. Participating PhD students, selected by their home institution, follow their preferred courses and present their own research during poster sessions. In addition to the academic program, the ULLA Summer Schools are also known for their strong social activities. Overall, the ULLA Summer Schools provide a unique opportunity for PhD students to build an international network in pharmaceutical sciences. Respiratory Drug Delivery (RDD®) Europe 2019 took place at the Estoril Congress Center near Lisbon, Portugal, from May 7–10, attracting academic, government, and pharmaceutical industry representatives to hear and build on the latest scientific, clinical and regulatory advances. Jointly organized by RDD Online and Aptar Pharma, the conference was notable for the quality of its highly regarded presenters and progressive program themes. Attracting over 500 delegates from over 30 countries, this was the largest RDD Europe conference to date, with the majority of delegates coming from continental Europe (47%) and the others traveling from the UK (25%), the US and Canada (16%) or Brazil, China, India, Israel, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Uruguay (collectively, 12%). About 85% of attendees reported working for pharmaceutical companies or their suppliers while the remaining 15% were from academia and regulatory authorities. Innovation in Local Drug Delivery Summer School

Some diseases of particular anatomic districts are not adequately treated by systemic drug administration, mainly because of the difficulty to reach the district itself. Local drug delivery methods are currently developed to treat more efficiently pathologies of inner ear, eyes, SNC, and to target drugs to tumors. A wide range of drug delivery systems or devices were evaluated in research and clinic over the last decade for local drug delivery. The school covered all the topics related to Local Drug Delivery, including: drug targeting, topical administration, in situ forming systems. The regulatory aspects was also be considered. The Summer School in INNOVATION IN LOCAL DRUG DELIVERY hosted 40 young scientists (PhDs and postdocs) and 20 senior scientists from academia and industry. The intensive four-day curriculum was designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to pulmonary drug delivery as well as lectures on hot topics in aerosol medicine. CUPIDO was presented during the European Researcher’s Night in Athens by the BET Solutions team. The Researcher’s Night is a European science festival attracting over 1.500.000 visitors in 300 European cities. The event took place in Greece on the 29th of September and attracted thousands of visitors of all ages!

The aim of this symposium was to bring together developers and users of techniques that already allow or will allow studying and controlling cellular physiology in highest detail. The methods and applications that were discussed comprised advanced light microscopy as well as scanning probe microscopy techniques. Michele Miragoli, from CNR, was there to represent CUPIDO.

CUPIDO had a great networking-time at the 34th Annual Meeting of the European Section of the ISHR. Our project coordinator presented the project in a poster and talk and received a valuable feedback. The mission of the meeting was to promote the discovery and dissemination of knowledge in the cardiovascular sciences on a Europe-wide basis as part of the worldwide ISHR community.
